O presente estudo tem por objetivo compreender como indivíduos com formação e carreira em áreas eminentemente técnicas, como engenharia, química e biologia, tornam-se empreendedores, identificando as experiências que os influenciaram a mudar da carreira técnica para a carreira empreendedora. A pesquisa é de caráter qualitativo e exploratório, utilizando-se da metodologia de História de Vida com perspectiva temporal longitudinal e retrospectiva. Realizou-se entrevistas ao longo do tempo com três empreendedores com formação técnico-científica cujas empresas já tenham experimentado um crescimento significativo. Os resultados obtidos mostram que o entorno familiar exerce grande influência na decisão de empreender, especialmente se o profissional técnico teve um modelo de educação que lhe trouxe independência e autoconfiança e se a família for um “porto seguro” para as incertezas da vida empreendedora. Além disso, o profissional técnico faz a transição de carreira de forma planejada e empreende na mesma área de conhecimento, visando minimização de riscos.
